Borja López Menéndez

A product of the youth system at Sporting Gijón, he is a defender who stands out for his ability on the ball and his experience in European Football

Borja was already a hugely promising youngster as an U10 player at Xeitosa and was soon playing from the U12 team at Real Sporting and climbed up through the ranks to the first team. In 2013/14, he was transferred to AS Monaco, and was loaned in January of that season to Rayo Vallecano. He then returned to Monaco before being loaned back to Spain, this time to Deportivo, helping them avoid relegation on the very last day with a draw at the Camp Nou. While still on the Monaco books he was loaned out again in 2015/16 to Portuguese club Arouca, and in January terminated his contract with the French club and joined FC Barcelona.

On 30 November 2016 he made his debut for Luis Enrique's first team in the Copa del Rey tie away at Hércules which ended 1-1. The Asturian defender started that day and was one of five Barça B players to make their first appearances for the Barça first team.

Technical profile

A tall, well-built left-sided centre back who came out of the Sporting Gijón academy. Great at getting the ball out of defence with his left foot and good in the air both in attack and defence. Has played international football for Spain up to U19 level.
