First team debut

Sergio Busquets  debuted in the 2008/9 season when Pep Guardiola was the coach. The midfielder went from playing in the Third Division the previous season, also with Pep as his coach, to becoming a key figure in the first team's midfield. Busquets made his debut in the second league game of that season against Racing Santander at Camp Nou which ended 1-1.

First goal as a blaugrana

The first goal Busquets scored arrived in the Champion League in an away game against Basel. It was the third fixture of the group phase and the blaugranas played excellently at St.Jakob-Park winning 5-0. Sergio's goal was the second on the day and practically assured qualification for the round of 16.

First treble in his first season

The first season Busquets played in the first team was like a dream. In this campaign Barça were fortunate enough to win the treble. A unique and special feat which the club had never managed to do before. Winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League was a stunning success and they ended the calendar year winning six titles as they went on to win the European and Spanish Supercups and the Club World Cup.

Second Champions League at Wembley

In the 2010/11 campaign FC Barcelona reached the top of the football world. The exhibition put on by the team in the Champions League final against Wembley against Manchester United (3-1) was champagne football and confirmed the team's legendary status. Sergio Busquets played 90 minutes and was one of the key cogs in Guardiola's passing machine.

A goal that gave Barça hope

Sergio Busquets stole the limelight in the return leg of the Champions League semifinals against Chelsea at the Camp Nou. The Catalans had lost the first lef 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and Busquets opened the scoring in second leg which levelled the tie. Barça managed to go 2-0 up but they just missed out on the final with an aggregate score of 2-2, exiting the competition because of the away goal rule.

200th game with Barça

Busquets played his 200th game with the first team in a high-intensity game in the 2012/13 season. The game was a comeback victory against Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán in which the away team were 2-1 down until the final minutes and managed to turn the game around winning 3-2. Busquets reached this landmark in his fifth season at FC Barcelona.

Following in Puyol's footsteps

In August 2014, at the beginning of Luis Enrique's first season it was announced that Busquets would inherit Carles Puyol's number '5' shirt. Sergio left behind his number '16' shirt and took on the responsibility of wearing the shirt worn by Puyol who captained Barça during ten seasons.

Second treble with the club

In 2009 it was thought that winning the treble was a one off but Barça were able to prove their dominance in the last decade by doing the impossible again. The blaugranas had another perfect season and they triumphed in the league, cup and Champions League. Busquets is one of the few players who played in the team during both treble winning seasons.

Captain for the first time

Sergio Busquets started the 2015/16 season as the team's third captain behind Andrés Iniesta and Leo Messi. However, the midfielder experienced a game as captain for the first time against Sevilla last season as the first two players were unavailable. That day the blaugranas lost 2-1 but the defeat served as a wake up call which led to Barça going on an incredible 39 game unbeaten run.

Contract renewal until 2021

Busquets renewed his contract with FC Barcelona last September. He has become a crucial figure in the team and it is very important for the club to make sure he remains a Barça player in the future. The midfielder signed until 2021 with an option of extending the contract into 2022/23 depending on the amount of games played. He stated he is “very keen to remain with the Club for the rest of my career.”
