Barça will next meet newly promoted Alavés, who drew 0-0 with Sporting Gijón this weekend | La Liga

FC Barcelona made it two wins out of two with their 1-0 win at San Mamés, and they are joined on maximum points by one familiar foe and one less expected early leader.

The latter is Las Palmas, who have scored an impressive nine goals in their first two games and thus move to the top of the Liga table on goal difference. The Canary Islanders routed Granada 5-1 on Sunday – a disappointing result for on-loan Sergi Samper, who was starting his first game for the Andalusians.

The other side with six points is Real Madrid, who had to work hard for their 2-1 win at home to Celta. Orellana was quick to get the visitors back level after Morata had put Madrid ahead after 60 minutes, and it took a spectacular finish from Kroos to eventually secure the three points.

Atlético Madrid, who have not finished outside of the top three for four seasons, have not had the best of starts. After being held by Alavés on the opening day, they drew 0-0 at the ground of another newly promoted side, Leganés, on Saturday. Things are even bleaker for Valencia, beaten 1-0 at Eibar and still without a point.

Barça’s first fixture after the international break will be at home to Alavés (Saturday 10 September at 8.30pm CET). The side from Vitoria have drawn both of their opening fixtures, their Sunday afternoon game at home to Sporting Gijón having ended without score.

Wins for European rivals

All three of Barça’s rivals in Champions League Group C also have one hundred per cent records in their respective leagues. Two goals from Raheem Sterling and one from Fernandinho meant that Manchester City saw off West Ham on Sunday and share the lead in the Premiership with Chelsea and local rivals Man United.

North of the border Celtic also made it three wins out of three by beating Aberdeen 4-1 to stay top of the Scottish Premiership. Moreover, they have a game in hand ahead of the league’s first Old Firm derby since Rangers were relegated in 2012.

And an 85th minute goal from Lars Stindl bagged a 2-1 win for Borussia Monchengladbach against Bayer Leverkusen on the opening day of the Bundesliga.
