The midfielder Frenkie de Jong has extended his deal with FC Barcelona until 2029 as on Wednesday the Dutchman signed his new contact alongside president Joan Laporta in the Club's head offices.
A special day
De Jong visited the Club offices following the day's training session to put pen to paper in front of FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafael Yuste, board member Joan Soler, director of the Football Area, Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco”, football coordinator, Bojan Krkic, and the rest of the members of the Sporting Commission.
"I want this dream to continue for many more years"
De Jong addressed the media to conclude the event and assured that he had always "dreamed of playing for Barça", that he wants "this dream to continue for many more years" and "to extend it as much as possible". Furthermore, he also highlighted that the feels "very comfortable with everyone" and "motivated by the good spell the team is good through".
He also praised the work of Hansi Flick since he joined, stating that "My relationship with the mister has been good from the first moment. He has always said that he believes in me, and he has shown that". "I can improve many things and I will keep working like always", concluded the Dutchman.
Elegant midfielder
Frenkie de Jong came to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2019 from Dutch club Ajax, where he had made his name as one of the most promising midfielders in Europe, and shown that he would be a perfect fit at Barça.
In his first season in 2019/20 he made 42 appearances and slowly adapted to the demands of La Liga. Despite various coaching changes, De Jong has been a vital figure in midfield pretty much since his arrival.
Indispensable for Flick
Despite an injury hit start to his career under coach Hansi Flick, the Dutch midfielder when fully fit quickly became a regular in the German coach's line up. In 2024/25 De Jong made 46 appearances for Barça, scoring twice.
At the age of 28, De Jong is reaching his peak and has already two league title, two Copas del Rey and two Super Cups to his name as a Barça player. Furthermore, he is second on the all time list of appearances of Dutch players at Barça, closing in on the leader Phillip Cocu.
Barça are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part the current sporting project due to his quality and experience.
