FK Gintra Universitetas – Barça Women: A historic win to remain unbeaten (0-6)

The blaugranes achieved their biggest margin of victory in Europe and take an important step forward in the Champions League

Gintra Universitetas were overwhelmed 0-6 by Barça Women on Wednesday, the blaugranes recording their biggest margin of victory in the Champions League. Goals from Mariona (2), Aitana, Duggan, Andonova and Olga ensured that the visitors’ dominance on Lithuanian soil was rewarded.

Barça controlled the game from the first whistle, with Gintra trying desperately to repel the incessant pressure from the away team. Andressa Alves and Lieke Martens both went close in the early stages but keeper Kaselitè was up to the task on both occasions.

However, it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken and Aitana’s header from a pinpoint Martens cross in the 36th minute opened the scoring. By now, Barça’s dominance was total. So much so that Paños became a bystander for much of the half. Mariona doubled their lead just before the break (0-2, min 44), the score line much more reflective of the patterns of play.

Barça's superiority confirmed

Fran Sánchez’s side continued with their iron grip on the match and Mariona grabbed her second just before the hour mark with a powerful shot. At 0-3 Gintra had a great chance themselves, but none of their three forwards could score.

Within 12 minutes of coming on as a substitute, Toni Duggan put the game beyond the hosts, but rather than sit back, Barça Women rounded off a complete performance with two late goals from Olga Garcia and Andonova.
