Jordi Alba and Arda Turan after Spain beat Turkey 3-0 in Nice | FIFA.COM

Spain defeated Turkey 3-0 on Friday night in possibly the most stunning performance from any team so far at Euro 2016. And with Pique’s late goal having grabbed a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in their opening fixture, six points out of six were enough to seal a place in the next round with a game in hand.

That means that four of the Barça contingent playing at the tournament will be staying on for the last sixteen. The negative note from this evening’s result is that after losing their first two fixtures, Arda Turan’s Turkey only have a very remote mathematical chance of making it out of the group.

Two goals from Morata and another from former Barça player Nolito won tonight’s game in Nice. Andrés Iniesta, Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets of Barça all started the game. Iniesta was simply outstanding, and was justly recognised for his contribution by being named UEFA man of the match for the second time in the competition.

Croatia held by Czechs

In the other game in the group, played earlier on in the day in Saint Etienne, Barça had another MVP in Ivan Rakitic. But the day ended in frustration for he and his Croatian side.

Perisic and Rakitic himself scored either side of half-time and it looked like Croatia were heading for a comfortable win and qualification for the second round. But the ship was unsteadied when Skoda pulled one back for the Czech Republic after 76 minutes. Matters were not helped by the game being suspended for several minutes due to flares being thrown from the Croatian end of the stands, and when play resumed Necid equalised with a last minute penalty.

Nevertheless, the result still means that with four points in the bag, Croatia could still make it into the second round even if they lose to Spain when they close the group on June 21.
