After finishing in fifth place in the league phase of the competition FC Barcelona booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League without the need for a play off. Now, with the play off round complete, Barça know that they will face either Newcastle United or Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.

The draw for the last 16 takes place on Friday at 12pm CET and the blaugranes already know that whoever their opponents are they will have the second leg at Spotify Camp Nou thanks to their high finish in the league phase.

Previous meeting in the league phase

Both Newcastle United and PSG have recent history with the blaugranes in Europe. The Premier League side faced Hansi Flick's team in the league phase of this season's competition with Marcus Rashford scoring twice to give the blaugranes a 2-1 win at St. James' Park.

PSG also faced Barça in the league phase this season, a last minute goal giving Luis Enrique's team a 2-1 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

In the play offs Newcastle despatched Kazakh club Qarabağ, winning 6-1 away and 3-2 at home in England. PSG dispatched fellow Ligue 1 club Monaco in the play off round, coming back from behind at home to win the first leg 3-2. In the second leg they fell behind once again but goals from Marquinhos and Kvaratskhelia put them in front. Teze's late equaliser was not enough to turn the tie around for the club from the principality.

All eyes on Friday's draw

The focus now turns to the draw for the last 16 on Friday at 12pm CET. Hansi Flick's team already know that they will face a first leg at St. James' Park against Newcastle United or at the Parc des Princes against PSG on 10/11 March with the return leg to come at Spotify Camp Nou on 17/18 March.
