Moments after Luis Enrique announced his decision to leave FC Barcelona at the end of the season, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke to Barça TV about his thoughts on the man who has been “a super manager for three seasons”.
“Luis Enrique is one of the greatest managers in Barça’s history,” said Bartomeu before adding that: “Next year he will no longer be here, but we are pleased with the work he has done so far and what he will do until the end of season." He has stated that the club will "support, as we always do, so that the season can finish in the best way possible, hopefully continuing in a winning way".
Bartomeu recognized that it was surprising news, explaining what Luis Enrique had said, that “in the summer, he told us that this year could be his last. A few days ago, he told us he would not be continuing.”
Once the decision became public, the president told the team and the fans to remain focused on the competitions left. “We do not have to speculate any more and now we must focus on the future. The league is left, the match against PSG, the Copa final and we have a lot of work ahead of us”.
Calm and discretion
From now, the president is aware that there will be many different names tipped to replace Luis Enrique, but insisted the club will approach this process “with calm”. “We will work with discretion and, from 1 July, we will announce the name of the new manager”.
“The important thing is to prepare for the games that are left. We have to give our support until the end of the season, because we can win titles.”Finally, Bartomeu reiterated that the team, under Luis Enrique, “has won eight out of ten possible titles in three seasons. He has given us a lot of success in the last few years and has given the club a great image. With that in mind, it is not over, three passionate months lie ahead.”
