The story of Alexia Putellas is one of talent, resilience and love for a player who has become much more than a footballer. A Barça Women icon who arrived at the age of 18 in 2012 from Levante, and who has grown with the team since then. Now, 14 years later the midfielder from nearby Mollet del Vallès is set to leave Barça on a high after writing herself into the history books of her childhood club.

Alexia Putellas will say goodbye to the Club in an event that will take place this Wednesday at 11am CEST at Spotify Camp Nou, giving FC Barcelona to chance to recognise the legacy created by a player who has become a role model on and off the field and who has helped women’s football to grow across the globe.

507 games as a blaugrana

Since the day of her debut it was clear that she was a special player. As the seasons have passed, she has gained icon status, the guiding light for a team who have gradually become a world force.

With 507 appearances behind her, she is second on the all-time list, just nine behind Melanie Serrano on 516. Her 232 goals are a club record, and a total of 38 trophies tells its own story: 4 Champions Leagues, 10 League titles, 10 Copas de la Reina, 6 Spanish Super Cups and 8 Copas Catalunya, many of them as captain.

Beyond the trophies, Alexia’s impact has been to raise the bar in terms of competitiveness in women’s football and inspire generations across the world.

The first female blaugrana to win the Ballon d’Or, she has won it twice, in 2021 and 2022. In both those years she also was named FIFA The Best and Player of the Year by UEFA. With the Spanish national side Alexia has also won a World Cup and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Tenacity

If one thing has elevated Alexia’s career it is her extraordinary ability to overcome obstacles. Serious injury during her career has allowed her show her character, each comeback an example of sacrifice, mental fortitude and discipline.

Not only has she bounced back from adversity, but she also continued to be a leader, bringing individual and collective success together. Barça Women have grown alongside their captain who is no doubt now a Club icon and a reference point in world football.
