The talent of La Masia is beating strongly in the FC Barcelona first team. And it does so especially through the boots of Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal. Three outstanding footballers from the Class of 2007, who have shone all the way up through the ranks of the blaugrana youth system and that are still together on the biggest stage of all, Spotify Camp Nou.

Throughout history, many literary authors have been grouped into generations because they shared characteristics, style or themes. Now the world of football is talking about the 2007 generation at FC Barcelona. The trio share the same year of birth, but also an idea and style of play, a common upbringing, and a breakthrough into Barça’s first team.

Together, the Catalans threesome embody FC Barcelona’s clear commitment to La Masia. The 18 years olds all featured prominently in the recent Copa del Rey semifinal against Atlético Madrid. Spotify Camp Nou witnessed a masterclass from these three young figures, who led the team in a comeback attempt that ultimately did not come to fruition.

Dream years

All three coincided at different stages and in different youth teams at the club. The first time they played together was at U12A level in the 2018/19 season, when Lamine finished as top scorer, with Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal also regular starters for a team that won every single league match it played.

They were back together at U14B in 2019/20 and again the the U14A side of 2020/21, also winning the league. Lamine was still scoring no end of goals, but the other two showed they could also find the net when called upon. Cubarsí was the third-highest scorer for the U14B side, and Bernal was the second-highest scorer when they moved to the next age category.

Big breakthroughs

They are still teenagers, but it seems as though Lamine, Cubarsí and Bernal have spent a lifetime in the Barça first team. In every match they show their game-changing quality, each in a different line of play. The defence, midfield and attack are well protected by these three members, as demonstrated in the attempt to overturn the tie against Atlético Madrid.

Pau Cubarsí was a wall in defence and spurred every attack with his crucial interventions. Marc Bernal dominated the midfield with outstanding personality and crowned his performance with two goals. And Lamine Yamal, once again, conducted the attack with his unstoppable ability to beat defenders. Three vital pieces who almost made the impossible possible.

Their performances were rightfully reflected in the stats. Bernal monopolised the shots, Lamine Yamal the chances created and successful dribbles, and Pau Cubarsí the completed passes, tackles won and defensive interventions.

The Class of 2007 is on everyone’s lips and will undoubtedly bring many joys to the Barça fanbase. The present and the future of Barça are well protected with these three!
