As is customary on the eve of a Champions League clash, Hansi Flick wasn’t the only voice at Tuesday’s press conference. This time it was Pedri who stepped up to represent Barça ahead of Wednesday night’s blockbuster against Paris Saint-Germain at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (kick-off 9pm CEST).
The Canary Islander made it clear he holds PSG in the highest regard. “They’ve already shown they’re one of the best teams in the world” he said.
But he was quick to stress that Barça belong in the same bracket, insisting both squads have the talent “to win the Champions League.” For Pedri, these are the nights footballers live for: “We want to play these games, because they’re the best in the world and they’re the ones you enjoy most.”
Brave team
Pedri was bullish about how Barça will approach the tie: “Both teams will want the ball. We’ll go all out to dominate and press. We’ve been a brave side ever since Flick arrived.” He also reckons PSG’s attacking style under Luis Enrique could play into Barça’s hands: “There are more spaces. For us it’s better against a team that plays like that.”
Asked about his own role, the 22-year-old said the midfield duel could prove decisive: “We’ll tip the balance.”
Nod to Aitana
On a personal note, he spoke of feeling “valued” and of the affection he receives from the fans every day. And he made sure to return a compliment from Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí: “I want to thank her for what she said. She should just keep doing what she’s doing, because it can’t be done any better.”
