Ibrahim Afellay retires

Dutch attacking midfielder, who was at Barça for three seasons, decided the time has come to hang up his boots

Former FC Barcelona footballer, Ibrahim Afellay, has decided to put an end to his football career at the age of 34. He announced his decision today on NOS. After having represented also represented Schalke 04, Olympiacos and Stoke City, in 2019 he returned to his original club and the one that he has played the most games for, PSV Eindhoven in his native Holland.

He has also made 53 appearances for the Dutch national team. At the Camp Nou, he won six major trophies, including one Champions League, one Liga and the Club World Cup.

Perhaps the fondest memory among Culers is of the Champions League semi-final in 2011 against Real Madrid. The Dutchman came on as a 71st minute substitute and it was he who set up the first of Leo Messi’s two goals.
