Barça and Janus Smárason reached an agreement for the Icelandic player to join the blaugranes from Pick Szeged on 1 July 2026. 

The centre back came to Barça at the peak of his powers with an impressive career already behind him. Smárason started his career in his native Iceland with Haukar Hafnarfjordur before playing in Denmark, Germany, Norway and Hungary before signing for Barça. 

Apart from Pick Szeged, his former clubs also include Magdeburg (2023-24), Kolstad (2022-23), Frisch Auf Goppingen (2020-2023) and Aalborg (2017-20). His list of honours include World Club Cups, Bundesliga and German Cup titles as well as domestic titles in Denmark and Norway.

Janus Smárason is a centre back with an ability to direct the play, find the pivots and get forward. His physical presence allows him to help in defence as well and even player as a second defender if needed.
