E. Royal, as he prefers to be known, joined Barça in the summer of 2021. Born in Sao Paulo on 14 January 1999, he is a wing back with ample experience of football in both Brazil and Spain.
On 2 June 2021, FC Barcelona informed Real Betis Balompié that it was exercising its right to bring back Emerson Royal after two and a half years on loan to the Seville-based club, where he played 79 games, playing more minutes than any other player in Manuel Pellegrini’s squad, which finished sixth in the league to earn a place in the Europa League.
Emerson previously played for Ponte Preta and Atlético Mineiro in his native country and in 2019 came to Europe as part of three-way deal. He made his debut in the Paulista Championship on 22 February 2017 and joined Atlético Mineiro a year later, where he started catching the eye of European scouts.
He has played for Brazil at U20 and U23 level, and earned his first full international in 2019 in a friendly against South Korea. He was named in the squad for the 2021 Copa America.
He is an attack-minded full back who brings depth to the team. A natural for gaining ground, he also joins in with the attack and is a frequent provider of assists.
