Barça and Valencia go head to head this Thursday in the first leg of one of the classic games in Spanish Cup history.

The honours are even in the last ten meetings between them in the competition, with each side getting the better of the other on five occasions.

The only time they ever met in the final, in 1971, it was Valencia that were victorious. But on each of the five seasons when Barça got the upper hand, they have gone on to win the trophy.

Ronald Koeman was the hero 1990, the second season under Johan Cruyff, while in 1998 the headlines were grabbed by Rivaldo, who contributed three goals to a memorable victory.

The last two encounters, like this year’s, were both semi-finals. And Barça won both.

Carles Puyol, Cesc Fábregas and Xavi scored the goals in 2012.

And then there was that most sublime of semi-finals two seasons ago. Leo Messi scored three and Luis Suárez went one better with four in a 7-0 steam-roll at the Camp Nou – turning the second leg at Mestalla into a mere formality.
