Ilkay Gündogan, Europe's top creator

German midfielder is the first player in the continent's big five leagues to create a hundred goalscoring opportunities

One thing that has been hugely apparent this season is what a remarkably omnipresent player Ilkay Gündogan is. While most players come in and out of games, the German international always seems to be there or thereabouts, hence it should come as no surprise to find him among one of the greatest chance creators in the European game. In fact, he has just become the first player in any of Europe's big five leagues to have made 100 goalscoring opportunities across all competitions this season.

No wonder he is such a permanent fixture in Xavi Hernández's plans, with 3,018 minutes of football played in 2023/24.

The difference between Gündogan and his Barça team-mates is staggering. João Cancelo is second, but he's way behind on 37, followed by Pedri and Raphinha with 35 each and Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal with 30.

Bruno Fernandes second

He has challengers from other teams though. Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United is just four short of a century of his own. The vast majority of the creators are based in the Premier League, where Gundogan himself was playing previously, while Isco of Betis is the only other Liga player in the top ten.

Gundogan has created 22 more chances than Isco. There are no other Barça players in the top ten of Liga chance creators, which continues as follows: Toni Kroos, Ivan Rakitic, Álex Baena, Iago Aspas, Takefusa Kubo, Jude Bellingham, Gerard Moreno, Antoine Griezmann and Rodrygo.
