FC Barcelona, Liga leaders for goals from headers

Aubameyang and Araujo both scored headers at the Bernabéu, taking the season's total to 13 in La Liga, five more than any other team

FC Barcelona is, by some margin, the team that has scored the most goals from headers in La Liga this season, no fewer than 13, including two last Sunday in the rout of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, scored by Aubameyang and Araujo.

The full list of headed goals is as follows:

Braithwaite and Piqué (vs Real Sociedad)
Araujo (vs Granada)
Memphis (vs Celta)
Jutglà (vs Elche)
Araujo (vs Sevilla)
Luuk de Jong (vs Mallorca)
Luuk de Jong (vs Granada)
Gavi (vs Atlético Madrid)
Luuk de Jong (vs Espanyol)
Luuk de Jong (vs Athletic)
Aubameyang and Araujo (vs Real Madrid).

Luuk de Jong (4) and Ronald Araujo (3) lead the way for headed goals, while there was also a header from Ansu Fati that found the net against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. Oddly, despite the flurry in the domestic championship, there have been no goals from headers this season in European competition.

Liga leaders

That’s five more headed goals than any other team in La Liga. The ‘battle’ for second place in the ranking is tremendously tight:

Betis, Valencia, Athletic Club, Atlético Madrid and Osasuna: 8
Getafe and Villarreal: 7

In the main European leagues, only Inter Milan, with 15 goals from headers in Serie A, can top Barça’s tally.  The message is clear… while Barça have not traditionally been the strongest of teams in the air, in the 2021/22 season under Xavi that is very far from the case!
