Frenkie de Jong's goals making a difference

The Dutch midfielder has scored 11 goals for FC Barcelona, and several of those have been of utmost importance

Frenkie de Jong has scored yet another vital goal, this time against Alavés on Sunday to secure a 1-0 win when, with just three minutes on the clock, Barça looked to heading for a 0-0 stalemate. It was his eleventh goal for the team, and was by no means the first that’s been absolutely crucial.

First goal

His first goal for the team was the second goal in a 5-2 defeat of Valencia at Camp Nou. He gave an assist in that game too, becoming the first Dutchman to achieve such a ‘double’ since Mark van Bommel in 2005.

Five months later in February 2020, Frenkie made it 1-1 away to Sevilla in a game Barça could go on to win 3-2. His first winner was in a 2-1 defeat of Real Sociedad at Camp Nou, after Willian José had put the visitors ahead and Jordi Alba had equalised.

A week later he again scored to secure three points, this time in a 1-0 win at Huesca. Last season he did likewise at Rayo Vallecano in the cup, sealing 2-1 victory in the 80th minute.

Title winning goals

Frenkie de Jong also scored important goals in the semi-final of last season’s Super Cup, another game with Real Sociedad, the opener against Elche last season, the pulsating cup encounter with Granada, and the Copa del Rey Final itself against Athletic Club

Making history

This season he has scored two goals, Sunday’s at Alavés and another away to Villarreal, as well giving two assists. He is third in the squad for minutes played in 2021/22 (1,395), topped only by Sergio Busquets (1,765) and Ter Stegen (1,710).
