Ten wins in Germany a cause for optimism

Ten wins in Germany a cause for optimism

Despite never winning away at Bayern Munich, good times in the past bolster belief for classification for the last 16

After the home draw against Benfica (0-0), Barça will travel to Munich for the final game of the Champions League group stage. Their task is clear - win and go through to the last 16 of Europe's premier club competition for the 18th year in a row. History isn't on their side, however, as Barça have never won away at Bayern Munich.

What's Barça's record in Germany?

Despite never having won in Munich, Barça have tasted victory in European competition in Germany. In fact, they have won 10 times on German soil (Köln, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Uerdingen, Bayer Leverkusen (2), Werder Bremen, Stuttgart, Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach).

The most recent victory in Germany was during the 2016/17 season, when Luis Enrique took his team to Borussia Mönchengladbach and won 2-1 with goals from Gerard Piqué and Arda Turan.

Another significant game for Barça on German soil was during the 2011/12 season under Pep Guardiola. Barça travelled to Leverkusen for the first leg of a last 16 match, with a 3-1 win ensuring they had one foot in the next round.

Good memories in Munich despite the win remaining elusive

They may not have won at Bayern Munich, but FC Barcelona have many magical memories in the Bavarian's stadium.

April 8th 2009 saw a resounding night in the Camp Nou with Barça putting on a show. In just 45 minutes, Pep's team managed to all but ensure classification with four almost consecutive goals. Travelling to the Allianz Arena with a significant advantage, Guardiola's men were not to be cowed either with a goal from Keita cancelling out a Frank Ribery goal and Barça were through to the semi-finals of the Champions League again.

Another major moment for Barça in Munich in the last ten years came in the 2014/15 season, this time in the semi-finals. After winning 3-0 in the first leg, Barça lost 3-2 but it proved enough to go through to the final in Berlin.

The second treble, with a German flavour

The Berlin final was precisely the last landmark event in Germany for FC Barcelona. Luis Enrique's team beat Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League final, which was also Xavi's last game as a first-team player

Other great stadiums conquered

Casting a glance across the big five European leagues, Barça is only yet to win at the Allianz Arena,  the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, and the Groupama Stadium in the 21st century. This means that Barça have won at grounds such as the Etihad Stadium, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Anfield, Santiago Bernabéu, Giuseppe Meazza and Parc des Princes
