Stat of the day | 100: Tito Vilanova's league points

In the 2012-2013 season, Barça equaled the record for points in a domestic campaign achieved by Real Madrid just one year earlier

Barça's 22nd LaLiga title was one of the most special. The team coached by Tito Vilanova managed to match a record that had been set by Real Madrid, just a year earlier. Los Blancos won the title in 2012, reaching 100 points, but Barça did it in 2013 and were proclaimed champions by 15 points, a new record in the competition. Curiously, the balance of results that season was exactly the same as Madrid's: 32 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses.

A promising start

The Catalans opened the league campaign with a 5-1 win at the Camp Nou against Real Sociedad, with goals from Messi - a double -, Puyol, Pedro and David Villa. Subsequently, several teams were beaten and only Madrid managed to get a draw against the Catalans on the seventh matchday. The 5-1 win at home against Athletic Bilbao on December 2 meant beating the best ever start in the history of the competition - at that time - a record in the hands of Real Madrid. The blaugrana, after 13 wins and a draw, had 40 points out of the 42 possible in the first fourteen matches, breaking the mark of 12 wins and 2 draws for Los Blancos in the 1991-1992 season.

Barça remained insatiable, and were first in the table from start to finish. Not even Tito Vilanova's sick leave stopped the Barça juggernaut. On January 13, Barça became the winter champion after defeating Málaga in the Rosaleda by 1-3. A week later, the Catalans suffered the first defeat of the season at Real Sociedad (3-2). After that defeat, the Catalans went five games without losing - 4 wins and a draw.

A devastating final sprint

Despite the defeat in the Bernabéu Clásico (2-1) on March 2, Barça didn't lose any of the remaining 12 matches, winning 10 and drawing two. One of these wins, on April 6, in the 5-0 against Mallorca at the Camp Nou, saw Eric Abidal return after overcoming cancer.

It was May 11, a day before visiting the Vicente Calderón, when Barça were crowned champions after Madrid stumbled at Espanyol (1-1). In the end, Tito Vilanova's side ended the season with 100 points, 115 goals for and 40 against.
