Born in Barcelona on 29 June, 1962, Joan Laporta i Estruch, member no. 9,601, is the first democratically elected president in FC Barcelona’s history to lead the Club in two separate periods.

Following his victory in the elections on 15 March with 68.18% of the votes, Laporta will begin his fourth term as FC Barcelona president, which will officially take effect on 1 July.

A graduate in Law from the University of Barcelona, he also has a master’s degree in Company Law and Taxation Expertise from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores Abat Oliba in Barcelona. He is a founding partner and owner of the Laporta & Arbós Advocats Associats legal firm; a member of the of the Barcelona Bar Association and, among other positions, is a patron and member of the executive commission of the Lluch Foundation and a patron of the Johan Cruyff Welfare Foundation.

First Presidency (2003–2010)

Despite not being the initial favourite in the early polls, Laporta became president of FC Barcelona after winning the elections held on 15 June, 2003. His first term, from 2003 to 2010, was marked by major sporting success, both in football and in the Club’s other professional sections.

He ran for re-election in the polls scheduled for September 3, 2006, and was confirmed as president on August 22 of that year, as no other pre‑candidate was able to collect the required number of member signatures to run. Two years later, on July 6, 2008, his mandate was subjected to a vote of no confidence that received 60% support, but it did not pass, as it fell short of the 66% required.

Under his leadership, FC Barcelona became the first football team ever to win the treble (Champions League, Copa del Rey, and La Liga) in the 2008–2009 season, and the first team to win all six major trophies (Copa del Rey, La Liga, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup, and Club World Cup) in a single calendar year, in 2009, with Pep Guardiola as coach.

This first presidency ended in the summer of 2010 when, as dictated by the Club's statutes, elections were called, and he could not run again after completing two consecutive terms.

Second Presidency (since 2021)

After running in the 2015 elections, won by Josep Maria Bartomeu, Joan Laporta once again stood for election in 2021 and was elected president for a second time. The elections held on 7 March, 2021 were affected by the COVID‑19 crisis.

Over the past five years, Joan Laporta has faced the challenges of stabilising the Club’s finances, improving the competitiveness of the first team, driving forward the development of the Espai Barça project, with the new Spotify Camp Nou as its centrepiece, and preserving La Masia as a fundamental pillar of the Club’s playing style and youth development philosophy.
