Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football. As he revealed on social media, the Canary Islander is calling time on a career spanning more than two decades, which began at La Masia and saw him play a key role in some of the most glorious moments in Barça history under Pep Guardiola.
From Tenerife to Barcelona
Pedro arrived in Barcelona from Tenerife at the age of 17 to join the Barça youth system. After progressing through the youth ranks and Barça B, he made his first-team debut in the 2007/08 season. Two years later, in the summer of 2009, he signed his first contract as a first-team player.
He made an immediate impact. In 2009/10, he became the first player to score in all six official competitions contested by Barça in the same season: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.
One of the most memorable moments of his Barça career came on 28 May 2011. At Wembley, Pedro scored Barça's opening goal in the Champions League final against Manchester United, setting the team on their way to a 3-1 victory and a fourth European title. He won everything there was to win with Barça.
Glittering career
In the summer of 2015, Pedro embarked on a new chapter with Chelsea before going on to play for Roma and Lazio. He now brings the curtain down on a hugely successful career. The 17-year-old who arrived in Barcelona from Tenerife leaves professional football having made his mark on one of the greatest eras in Barça history.
Friday farewell event in Auditori
Pedro Rodríguez will mark his retirement with a farewell event this Friday, 9 October, at the Auditori 1899, starting at 11.30am CEST.
