João Cancelo and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the Portuguese footballer to join the Club. The full-back arrives as a permanent transfer basis and signs as a Barça player until 30 June 2029.

After two loan spells

Cancelo first joined Barça in the 2023/24 season on loan from Manchester City, spending a full season under coach Xavi Hernández. He made 42 appearances, scoring four goals while providing five assists.

After his first spell, Cancelo moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, before returning to Barça again on loan in January 2026. He soon earned Hansi Flick's trust, ending the season as an important player for the blaugrana coach, mainly playing at left back, making 23 appearances, with two goals and four assists.

A career at big clubs

Born on 27 May 1994, Cancelo started out in his home country at Benfica, where he won the league, the cup, league cup and a super cup. In the summer 2015 he joined Valencia, where he made 91 appearances before moving on to Italy.

The Portuguese fullback played for Inter Milan (2017/18) and Juventus (2018/19) in Italy, before joining Manchester City in summer 2019. He remained at the English club for three and a half seasons, which included two loans, one at Bayern Munich and the other at FC Barcelona.

Portuguese international

He has also been a regular player for Portugal down the years. He played for the youth teams before making his full debut on 1 September 2016. He has been largely included in squads ever since, having made 73 appearances and was part of the 2018/19 Nations League winning squad. He also featured at the last two World Cups and the last European Championships.

João Cancelo now signs a permanent contract with Barça and is back available for Hansi Flick, who clearly trusts the fullback and will try to make the most of his talents and attacking intent. Cancelo is a blaugrana!
