The Spanish Super Cup final will once again carry the unmistakable flavour of El Clásico. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will face each other for the fourth consecutive time in the final of the competition, underlining a rivalry that in recent years has become a familiar battleground for the first trophy of the season.
The most recent head-to-heads favour the blaugrana. At present, the balance stands at 2–1. First came victory in the 2022/23 final, a 3-1 win secured by goals from Gavi, Lewandowski and Pedri.
Last year, in the 2024/25 edition, Hansi Flick’s side claimed both victory and the trophy (the 15th in the club’s history) with an emphatic 52 win. Coincidentally, that match was also played at the King Abdulaziz Sports City, a venue that then witnessed Barça’s comeback and will now once again host a final between Barça and Madrid.
Another precedent in the Final Four era
As for Los Blancos, their sole win in this recent run came in the 2023/24 final, when Real Madrid lifted the trophy after a 4–1 victory over Barça.
Beyond finals, the two sides also crossed paths in the semi-finals of the 2021/22 season, a tie that ended with Barça’s elimination following a 3-2 defeat to Madrid.
Records to break
This latest final also comes with an added incentive for Barça. The team have the chance to retain the title for a second consecutive year, a feat no side has managed in the past 15 years.
Should the trophy be lifted, the blaugrana would also end another notable trend: it has been eight years since the reigning league champions went on to win the Supercopa the following season.
Clásicos in the Super Cup
Looking at the overall record in the competition, Barça and Real Madrid have faced each other a total of 18 times across the tournament’s three different formats: the two-legged system in place until the 2017/18 season, the single-match editions of 2018/19 and 2019/20, and the current Final Four format introduced in 2020. Overall, Barça have six wins to Madrid’s ten, with two draws.
And so, in Jeddah, another chapter will be added to a historic rivalry that will once again decide a title. With recent precedent on their side, Barça will be looking to extend their Super Cup honours further.
