The defender has been one of the talking points of the last few weeks with Gerard Martín demonstrating his versatility by putting in a series of impressive performances at centre back. In the pre-game press conference ahead of Barça's game against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, his recent form was one of the many topics touched upon in his appearance before the press. 

"It's always a motivation playing at Spotify Camp Nou, and in the Champions League that little bit more," admitted Martín. "We know we have to win and that we can't afford to drop more points," he added on Barça's European return to their home ground. 

 

Confidence from Flick 

On his recent change of position, Gerard Martín revealed that coach Hansi Flick "wanted to try me out in preseason and I felt confident. I don't have any preference with regards to position." Nevertheless, despite the test in preseason, it is only in recent matches that the defender has moved into the middle of the back four. 

"I knew that one day it would be my turn. I had been training in that position and when the time came the coach asked me if I was ready and I told him yes. He has always show confidence in me," admitted Martín, before concluding that he has always felt "important in the team."
