The Club Brugge v FC Barcelona match on Wednesday was not just any old game for Pau Cubarsí, as the Catalan central defender became the third player aged under 19 years of age to play 20 UEFA Champions League games, aged 18 years and 287 days old to be precise in the 3-3 draw against the Belgian side after coming on in the final minutes to replace Eric Garcia.
Most Champions League games before turning 19.
The Catalan defender has joined a select group formed by his teammate Lamine Yamal and PSG player Warren Zaïre-Emery. The Catalan forward achieved that number of appearances aged 17 years and 270 days old during last season. The Frenchman is now aged 19 years old and reached the figure aged 18 years and 277 days old.
Debut and MVP
Let's not forget that Pau Cubarsí made his Champions League debut on 12 March 2024 in the last 16 return leg against Napoli, and he showed his quality and potential from that very day onwards, being named MVP aged just 17 years and 50 days old. He has gone on to play 20 times since then, providing one assist.
So, Cubarsí has another age-based record to his name. He has become a key player for the blaugranes despite being so young, an aspect he shows every day. He now has 20 appearances in the premier club competition in Europe and that figure is undoubtedly likely to grow much bigger.
