Wednesday saw a Spain side with 11 blaugranes in the squad go through to the European Championship final after beating Germany 0-1 in extra time. A goal by Aitana in the 113th minute made the difference to see the national side through to a first ever European Championship final where they will play England.

Aitana, Puyol and Germany

There were many parallels on Wednesday to when Spain faced Germany in the men's 2010 World Cup. Many FC Barcelona players were also in that Spain squad, and it was also a goal from a blaugrana that decided the semi-final against Germany 15 years ago in 2010, coming from a corner. The only real difference was that Aitana's decisive goal came from a superb near post finish.

Two squads containing many blaugranes

This Spain women's team has 11 Barça players in the squad and the men's World Cup squad that won the trophy in 2010 was also stacked with blaugrana players. Seven Barça players left South Africa as world champions, namely Víctor Valdés, Puyol, Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta and Pedro. Let's see if the 11 Barça players in this tournament will follow the same path as 15 years ago and become European champions on Sunday.
