Memphis and De Jong heading for Qatar

Louis van Gaal names both of FC Barcelona's Dutch players in his squad for Qatar

Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong have both been picked by Louis Van Gaal in his Netherlands squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

De Jong played at Euro 2021, reaching the last sixteen, but as he didn't make his international debut until September 2018 in a friendly against Peru (where he assisted a goal for Memphis), this will be his first World Cup experience. But he has played 45 games for Holland, so he already knows plenty about football at the highest international level.

For Memphis, this will be his second World Cup after being part of the squad that finished third at Brazil 2014, also coached by Van Gaal. The Dutch failed to qualify for Russia 2018. Since winning his first cap in 2013, Memphis has played for his country 81 times, scoring an impressive 42 goals.

With former Barça men Luuk de Jong and Xavi Simons also picked for the squad, the Netherlands begin their campaign against African champions Senegal, before taking on Ecuador and then the host nation Qatar.
