The Malaga native will be the new coach for the next three seasons

Former Dream Team player, Carlos Ortega, who will turn 50 on July 14, has been chosen to be FC Barcelona's new handball coach for the next three seasons. Ortega, who was a Barça player for eleven seasons (1994-2005), will take over from Xavier Pascual who has been the coach for the last 12 years and won 61 titles.

The Malaga native comes from German side Hannover-Burgdorf where he's been the coach since the 2017 season. After retiring as a player, he began his coaching career at Antequera and stayed for six seasons (2005-2011). From there he traveled to Hungary to the almighty MKB Veszprém (2012-2015). He won the league and cup for the three seasons he remained in the Central European country. After this experience he traveled to Japan to be the coach of the international side (2016-2017), which he combined with the position of coach at KIF Kolding before heading to Hannover-Burgdorf.

Every possible title

As a member of the Dream Team, Carlos Ortega won six European Cups, five European Super Cups, a Cup Winners' Cup, an EHF Cup, six Asobal Leagues and four Copas del Rey among other titles.

As Barça coach, he will try to repeat the season that the team has had this year where they won every match and title available.
