The Minguezas: Blaugrana siblings

The Minguezas: Blaugrana siblings

Ari and Òscar are the first sister and brother to ever play for the women's and men's senior teams of the same top flight club in Spain

Ari Mingueza and Òscar Mingueza are a sister and brother who are talking points with both the FC Barcelona women’s and men’s teams respectively, a unique case football where two siblings are playing at the top level in both categories of the game.

A life in blaugrana

21-year-old Óscar has been at the club since U10 level, and after making his way through the youth ranks made his first team debut in the Champions League game away to Dynamo Kyiv on 24 November 2020.

His 17-year-old sister, has also played at every youth level, and made his debut in the 3-0 win at Santa Teresa on March 6.

A few hours later, on the very same day, her older brother made his 17th senior appearance in the 2-0 win at Osasuna, becoming the first brother and sister not only at Barça but anywhere in Spain to both play at the top level for the men’s and women’s teams of the same club.

Sibling stars

There have been several cases of brothers playing for the Barça first team, including Thiago and Rafinha Alcantara, Giovani and Jonathan Dos Santos, Frank and Ronald de Boer, Lorenzo and Joquim Rifé and César and Ricardo Rodríguez.

The Szymanowskis from Argentina were a similar case to the Minguezas. Alexander formerly played for Leganés, and is currently at Recreativo Huelva, while Marianela, is currently at Espanyol, having also played for Betis, Atlético Madrid, Valencia and Rayo. But they were never with the same team.

There is a case in Germany, however, specifically at Bayer Leverkusen, where brother and sister Florian Wirtz and Julianne Wirtz play for the men’s and women’s teams.
