GOG 30-37 Barça: Good quarterfinal first leg win

Hard work in defence and attack see the Catalans earn a vital win in Denmark

A win in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal for the Barça handball team, clearly defeating GOG by 30-37. Some great teamwork was only display in Denmark both in defence and attack, Cindric scoring most for the visitors, who were in control throughout.

Barça take control

Cindric and Nielsen started brightly at the Jyske Bank Arena, but the game got off to a fairly even start, with a +3 lead proving the largest, yet long shots were the only real threat from the Danish side.

Goals by Richardson and Ludovic Fabregas stepped things up for the visitors and with an outstanding defence on show, the lead was +5 halfway through the first half. No let up in intensity from the Catalans saw a halftime score of 15-19.

First leg win confirmed

Barça continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, any attempts by GOG to come back were snuffed out and they started to trail further on the scoreboard. The Catalans were finding holes in the Danish defence, scoring an unanswered +8. The win was looking very likely.

However, the home side weren't for giving up and cut into the lead. Pérez de Vargas led the resistance though, and a dizzying end with a real desire to score more goals saw a final score of 30-37.

The return leg in the Palau Blaugrana is still to come on 18 May at 8.45 local time, but this was truly a major step towards the Final Four.
