Memphis Depay: Did you know?

Memphis Depay: Did you know?

Ten different things you may not have known about the latest of a long line of Dutch stars that have played for FC Barcelona

Memphis Depay is joining FC Barcelona. So here are ten key things about the Dutchman that if you didn’t know already, you will need to know now.

1. The day he was born

Memphis Depay was born in Moordrecht (Netherlands) on 13 February 1994, the day that Barça suffered a famous 6-3 defeat at Zaragoza. Ronald Koeman was in the team that day, while another Dutchman, Johan Cruyff, would end up leading the team to the title on the final day.

2. First game, first goal

He made his pro debut for PSV Eindhoven on 21 September 2011 in a cup game against VV Sint Bavo. And he scored the first goal of the game!

3. First encounter with Koeman

He played his first Eredivisie game a few months later on 26 February 2012 against Feyenoord, managed at the time by... Ronald Koeman.

4. Young gun

As a 21-year-old in 2015, he was named young player of the year in Holland. It’s award that had previously been won by Richard Witschge (1989), Marc Overmars (1992), Patrick Kluivert (1995) and Frenkie de Jong (2018), all of whom went on to play for Barça.

5. Popular shirt

In 2015, Kitbag, a website specialising in sportswear, announced that its three best-selling shirts were those of Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Memphis Depay.

6. Barça connections

Memphis has been coached by a number of managers with blaugrana pasts or presents: Phillip Cocu (PSV, 2012 and 2013-15), Louis Van Gaal (Manchester United, 2015-17), Ronald Koeman (Holland, 2018-20) and Frank de Boer (Holland, 2020-present).

7. Shirt numbers

He wore 22 on the day of his debut and in his first seasons at PSV, and later switched to 7, which he also wore in Manchester. He started with 9 in Lyon, and then went from number 11 to number 10.

8. Much travelled

This will be fourth different league that he has competed in. In the current Barça squad, only Philippe Coutinho and Martin Braithwaite have played in that many, and nobody has played in more.

9. Tattoo lover

Depay has a number of tattoos on his body. He has a tiger’s face across his back in honour of his grandfather, who died just before his 15th birthday and to whom he dedicated a goal at the 2014 World Cup.

10. Blaugrana birthday

Last 17 August 2020, Depay posted a birthday message for his son on his Instagram account (@memphisdepay). And the boy was wearing a Barça shirt!
