FC Barcelona B v Real Racing Club: Promotion to Division 2A! (0-0)

Barça B controlled the game throughout and made their first-leg victory at El Sardinero count to secure promotion to Spain's second tier

Barça B are in Division 2A. Gerard López’s side drew 0-0 with Racing in the return leg of the play-off final and this meant that their 4-1 victory at El Sardinero secured promotion to Spain’s second division.

Barça’s second team are back in the highest league they can be in after a fabulous season in which they were league champions of Group III in Division 2B.

The match was tense and tough from the opening minute with both sides knowing what was up for grabs. Slowly, the game became more open and attacking with some chances being created but none of them were clear-cut.

Opening chances

As the minutes went by, the blaugranas began to take control of possession and create some chances. Gumbau saw a shot go to the right of goal in the 16th minute. Four minutes later, Aleñá’s excellent volley almost flew into the back of the net and, just after that, Romera’s low shot whistled past the post.

The visitors' reply didn’t take long to materialise and Racing had the best chance of the game so far in the 30th minute from a Granero shot. However, Gerard López’s team continued to dominate and control the first half even though the sides went into the break with the scores locked at 0-0.

In control in the second half

The second half started with a gilt-edged Barça chance: Aleñá passed into space, Romera crossed and Alfaro’s effort flew just over the bar. In response, Gándara had a close-range effort saved by José Suárez when it looked easier to score.

The chances continued to arrive with Alfaro again going close after impressive work down the right and Crespo saved an Aleñá attempt. Abel Ruiz also ran through on goal but was unable to find the finish.

In the end, the goal proved elusive for both sides and this suited Barça B because of their handsome win in the first leg of the play-off final at El Sardinero. That 4-1 victory proved to be the difference between the two sides and it means FC Barcelona B are back in Division 2A for the sixth time in their history.
