Carreras, a distinguished figure in Catalan society who had been the Catalanist politician Francesc Cambó’s personal secretary in his younger years, was a lawyer with liberal and democratic ideas — although he did have a possibilist attitude to the dictatorship, and was once a representative in the Francoist parliament — and had already formed part of the FC Barcelona board as vice president under Montal senior and Enric Martí Carreto.
As a staunch supporter of unity, Carreras wished to include representatives of different Barça families on the board, but this initiative, which was a good one in principle, ended up being the cause of no end of problems and confrontations between different members of the board. Finally, on 5 November 1969, Carreras stepped down from his position as president.
