Peace of Mind
The “Peace of Mind” project, led by the Barça Foundation and Scotiabank in collaboration with the Can Bou Play Foundation, uses sport as a tool for social transformation to strengthen emotional well-being and improve the employability of young people in vulnerable situations in Beetham Gardens, Trinidad and Tobago.
The initiative will benefit 50 secondary school students aged 12 to 18, with equal participation from boys and girls, particularly young people from communities facing socioeconomic difficulties, exposure to violence and social risks.
Emotional well-being and violence prevention
Young people’s emotional health is a significant challenge in Trinidad and Tobago, where youth suicide rates are high and access to specialised services remains limited, particularly in historically underserved communities.
In response to this situation, “Peace of Mind” proposes a comprehensive approach adapted to the cultural context, combining sports activities, emotional education, mentoring, peer support and access to professional care. The project aims to create a safe and trusting environment where young people can express themselves, develop life skills, strengthen their resilience and receive psychological support when needed.
Sport and community support
The project plans to implement a community well-being programme and organise sports and educational activities outside school hours. Through sport, it seeks to contribute to young people’s personal development and provide a safe space for participation, learning and interaction with others.
In addition, the initiative promotes community support and collaboration with various local stakeholders to strengthen young people’s access to the resources they need. In collaboration with universities and public bodies, efforts will be made to increase the presence of healthcare professionals in the area and facilitate access to psychological care and therapeutic support services.
Training and future opportunities
“Peace of Mind” also aims to support young people’s integration into the labour market through specific employability workshops. This area of work complements the emotional well-being and community support activities by providing tools designed to expand their future opportunities.
Through this initiative, the Barça Foundation and Scotiabank, in collaboration with the Can Bou Play Foundation, contribute to building safer, more inclusive and resilient communities, highlighting the power of sport as a driver of social transformation.
