Martí Vergés

Martí Vergés

Vergés (Vidreres, Girona, 1934 – Viladecans, Barcelona, 2021) was one of the stars of the sides at the end of the 1950s, beginning of the 1960s

A strong midfielder with excellent technique and a good finisher, Vergés is remembered for being part of an exceptional midfield alongside Segarra and Gensana. He was promoted to the first team in 1956 with Domènec Balmanya as coach after starring for the B team, then known as Espanya Industrial in the first division.

Vergés quickly became a starter in the side and in his first season he also became an international player. Every coach he played under valued his importance to the team and when he died in 1966, he was still in great shape. FC Barcelona paid tribute to him alongside Sígfrid Gràcia at Camp Nou in a game that took place on 12 October 1966.

He was president of the Veterans Association from 1999 to 2003 and later honorary life president.
