Leo Messi continues to set new records. The Argentine has ended the season with 34 goals in LaLiga, making him not only pichichi but also top scorer in Europe and winner of the Golden Shoe award for a record breaking fifth time. With his 34 strikes, Messi finishes two ahead of second placed Mohamed Salah of Liverpool in the rankings. The Barça number 10 wins the award for the second successive season and becomes the first player to win it no less than five times.

Messi topped the goalscoring rankings in Europe for the first time in 2009/10 with 34 goals; in 2011/12 he took it with an eye watering total of 50; a season later with an also impressive 46 and last season with 37. The Argentine’s consistency is undeniable: in eight of the last nine seasons he has finished first or second in the rankings of Europe’s top goalscorers.

45 goals in all competitions

Aside from his 34 goals in the league, Leo Messi has also scored six goals in the Champions League, four in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup, making a total of 34 goals in 54 appearance. Furthermore, he has produced 17 assists, his 12 in LaLiga more than any other player in the competition.
