It took nine matches and 730 minutes of football against Chelsea for Leo Messi to score his first goal against them. It came 12 years after his debut against the Premier League club, which was back on the 22 February 2006, a day when he dazzled the world with his skills, even if he did not find the net.

Chelsea had resisted the charms of the Argentine longer than anyone else. Only Villarreal, which held Messi scoreless for 594 minutes, managed to keep him at bay for anything like the length of time that the West London club did.

Messi also beats Courtois

At Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, Messi also broke another unfavourable streak: seven games he had gone without beating goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Messi finally scored on the Belgian in the 62nd minute of the first leg. The Argentine’s last goal past Courtois came way back on 16 December 2012, in a 4-1 win at home over Atlético Madrid.
