Bye bye Bayern

Pep Guardiola’s Bayern were always going to be a tough adversary in the semis of that competition, but Leo Messi popped up to save the day with his spectacular flooring of Boateng, voted top goal in the tournament. The Argentinian added another, Neymar Jr found the target too and it was Berlin here we come!

Breathtaking in Berlin

Burning form at the Bernabéu

21 November 2015 was a night to remember as Barça won 4-0 at the home of Real Madrid. Luis Suárez got two of the goals and Neymar Jr got one while also providing the assist for Andrés Iniesta. That was also the game that saw Leo Messi back in action after a two-month absence through injury.

On top of the world

Barça added the European Super Cup to their treble before they jetted off to Japan for the Club World Cup. Luis Suárez nagged away three against Guangzhou in the semi-final and added two more in the 3-0 defeat of River Plate. Leo Messi got the other against his compatriots.

Fall of Rome

There was a play against Roma in the 2015/16 Champions League that saw the trident combine to perfection, A 1-2 between Neymar Jr and Leo Messi was followed by another between the latter and Luis Suárez. The Argentinian cheekily beat Szczęsny to score the second of what would end up being a 6-1 win.

Now for something completely different

On 14 February 2016, Leo Messi and Luis Suárez emulated the historic penalty once scored by Johan Cruyff and Jesper Olsen. The victims were Celta Vigo as Leo Messi, rather than shooting, laid the ball sideways, in theory for Neymar Jr, although it was Luis Suárez who ended up striking home.

Three to win the double

On the final day of last season, Barça needed to win in Granada to clinch another Liga trophy. They did just that, 3-0, with all three goals coming courtesy of Luis Suárez off assists from Jordi Alba, Dani Alves and Neymar Jr. It also secured Suárez the Golden Boot thanks to his haul of 40 league goals.

Three centuries and counting

And so to Wednesday night, when Barça had a 2-1 deficit to turn around from the first leg in Bilbao. And the trident stepped up to the task in typically clinical fashion with a goal each including the 100th for Luis Suárez in a Barça shirt and the 300th for the trident since they have been together. Neymar Jr and Messi’s goals extended that number to 302.
