Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino made his Liga debut as Barça manager with a 7-0 hammering of Levante to ensure a third consecutive lead after the first round of matches. Also for the third year in a row, Messi got two goals, as did Pedro, and there was one each for Alexis Sánchez, Xavi and Dani Alves.

The run continued into the following season. With Luis Enrique now in charge, Barça beat Elche 3-0 with yet another double from Messi and one from Munir. That was a fine start in what would go on to be a treble winning season.

FC Barcelona again won their opening game in 2015/16, and it was an impressive one too, 1-0 at the always difficult San Mamés, home of Athletic Bilbao. Luis Suárez scored the goal but this time it wasn't enough to ensure that they started the campaign as leaders, the only time that's happened in the last six years.

This year, Barça have gone straight back into their habit of taking the early lead. They did it by powering past Betis to the tune of a 6-2 victory. For the fifth time in six seasons, Messi scored twice in the Liga debut. Luis Suárez went one better with three and Arda Turan got the other at the Camp Nou.
