Leo Messi chasing fourth European Golden Shoe

Leo Messi chasing fourth European Golden Shoe

With two weekends to go, FC Barcelona's Argentinian superstar has scored 35 goals, four more than second placed Bas Dost of Sporting Lisbon

There are just two games to go in the Liga season, and FC Barcelona’s Leo Messi is comfortably poised in pole position in the race for the European Golden Shoe – an award he would inherit from team-mate Luis Suárez, winner in 2015/16.

The Argentinian currently has 35 goals, and could win the title for an amazing fifth time if he can hold off the challenge from Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost, who has 31 goals so far.

Messi’s two final chances to extend his tally come away to Las Palmas and at home to Eibar, while the Dutchman will be in action away to 8th placed Feirense and at home to 10th plaved Chaves.

But there are two Bundesliga players also still in close contention - Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Borussia Dortmund, who have 28 goals each.

Barça’s Luis Suárez, meanwhile, has 27 goals in his own account and still has a strong chance of squeezing into the podium.
