FC Barcelona’s opening day win, by the numbers

Leo Messi starts the campaign in familiar fashion, netting a brace for the fifth in Week 1 of La Liga while Luis Suárez begins as he ended last season

FC Barcelona kicked off the new season in ideal fashion, with a 6-2 win over Real Betis at the Camp Nou. Just as he did on four previous opening weeks, Leo Messi grabbed two goals while Luis Suárez began his defence of the Pichichi title with a hat-trick. Arda Turan continued his fine scoring form, with his third goal in two matches. Here are the standout facts and stats from the first league game of the season:

  • Leo Messi scored his first brace since 6 March at Eibar in a 4-0 win
  • Luis Suárez netted for the six consecutive week in La Liga. The Uruguayan concluded last season with 15 goals in the last five weeks and continued that average into the new season with a hat-trick on Saturday
  • He started the season the same way he ended the previous one, as he also scored a hat-trick on the final day against Granada which gave Barça the title
  • Arda is also in good goalscoring form, with two goals in four days, following on from his midweek brace against Sevilla in the Super Cup
  • Rubén Castro's free-kick ended a run of eight games without conceding a goal. The last goal that Barça let in was against València on 17 April.
  • Barça have faced Andalusian opposition in their last five official games which have all ended in wins: Granada at the back end of last year (3-0), Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final (2-0), the two legs of the Spanish Super Cup against the Europa League champions (2-0 and 3-0), and the latest 6-2 win over Betis.
  • Three of the four summer signings made their debuts - Denis Suárez and Samuel Umtiti started the match, while Lucas Digne came on as a second half substitute.
