Barça's El Clásico victory as big as New York's skyscrapers

A watch party held by La Liga on a rooftop terrace on Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan was an immense success, even more so for Barça fans

Soccer enjoys a high level of support in New York City. Literally.

Over 3,000 people watched Sunday's El Clásico between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona as part of a viewing party held at the 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, smack dab in the middle of Manhattan.

The views of the surrounding skyline were spectacular, and were topped only by the game itself, which Barça won, 3–2, on a goal by Lionel Messi in the final seconds of injury time.

The victory capped an extra special day for Barça fans, many of whom were celebrating the Sant Jordi Festival, a day of love in which Catalans traditionally exchange books and roses.

Special guests on hand included the former Real Madrid player Raúl González, now the La Liga representative in the United States, and the former Barça defender Gianluca Zambrotta, who represented the Catalan club at the event.

"The house was packed," said one ecstatic Barça fan, barely able to contain herself. "We gave away roses and books for St Jordi, the fans received Zambrotta and Raul with great excitement, and when we won, the crowd went wild!"

The rooftop viewing party, it appears, was an instant classic.
