Atlético de Madrid v Barça Women: Slip up at the Calderón (2-1)

Xavi Llorens's team are defeated in Madrid and are overtaken by Atlético at the top of the table in the last game of the calendar year

Barça were unable to end the year on a high as Xavi Llorens' side fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Vicente Calderón in a game between first and second in the table. The result means the Colchoneras leapfrogged Barça into first place following a hard-fought win. Two first half goals from Corredera and Sonia Bermúdez were enough for the home side to take all three points despite Andressa Alves' strike and the Catalans attempts to level.

The first half was not good for Barça Women and they ended up paying for the 2-0 lead they conceded to the home team. A Marta Unzué header from a Melanie Serrano cross was the closest Barça came to getting a goal back.

Atlético Madrid started the game powerfully and they defended excellently. They took the lead through two ex-Barça players as Sonia Bermúdez assisted and Marta Corredera finished in the 27th minute. The striker Sonia, who is the leading scorer in the league with 16 goals, doubled the lead with a very good goal of her own. She took the ball with her back to goal, turned well and shot from the edge of the box with the ball flying past Sandra Paños and into the back of the net.

It was not to be

Barça responded following the break and they had chances through Marta Torrejón and Alexia Putellas, before Andressa Alves scored with a magnificent header which got Barça right back into the game at 2-1. The goal changed the dynamic of the game and the blaugranas were on the attack.

The home side were holding out for the final whistle to bring the incessant Barça attacks to an end. The Catalans went particularly close through Alexia Putellas' dangerous cross and from a Bárbara Latorre shot which was saved by Lola Gallardo. However, it was not to be and the Atlético Madrid took the three points and Barça's position at the top of the table.
