UD Tacuense v FC Barcelona Women: Historic week ends on a high (1-2)

Having secured a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League, Xavi Llorens' side secured a win which keeps them in the league title race thanks to a fantastic Hermoso performance

Barça Women are in fantastic form and they capped a memorable week in which they qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time with their ninth win in a row. Xavi Llorens’ side continued their fantastic run by beating Tacuense in the 24th league fixture of the season. The players secured a crucial win at a difficult away ground thanks to an inspired performance from Jenni Hermoso who scored twice.

The manager had spoken of the need to “adapt well to the change from the Mini to somewhere completely different.” His team responded very well and they came didn’t let their guard slip in a difficult away fixture following the euphoria of their European exploits.

Third time's a charm

After Barça had cut the leaders advantage by two points in the last round of fixtures, they wanted to keep up the pressure. With this in mind they started with intent and proceeded to dominate possession from the start. Vicky Losada saw a shot go just wide and Jenni Hermoso couldn’t quite convert a one-on-one with the keeper. The third chance didn’t go begging as Hermoso was on hand to convert a rebound from a Barça corner in the 18th minute (1-0).

Attacking display

Barça continued to attack as they looked to get the all-important second goal. Mariona Caldentey and Losada went close with a header and a shot which came off the bar but neither could find the back of the net. However, the home side equalised against the run of play from a penalty in the 58th minute.

The Catalans showed character and they fought hard to regain the lead. They managed to do so from an Alexia Putellas corner which Jenni Hermoso flicked into the net six minutes after the equaliser. Bàrbara Latorre could have scored the third but González produced a good save.

With six games to play, Barça Women are in second place two points behind the leaders Atlético Madrid. The next fixture is at home in two weeks’ time against Real Betis.
