This Saturday, FC Barcelona has commemorated the 25th anniversary of winning its first ever European Cup at Wembley on May 20 1992 at an event in the Auditori 1899 featuring president Josep Maria Bartomeu, vice president Jordi Cardoner and former player and commissioner for the celebrations José Mari Bakero.
Other guests included the Barça president at the time of the famous victory, Josep Lluís Núñez, former manager Carles Rexach, and ex-players like Robert, Urbano and Angoy, among many others associated to the club in the past and present.
José María Bakero, the man who scored the last-minute goal in Kaiserslautern, without which none of this would ever have happened, spoke about how he arrived at Barça and was exposed to Johan Cruyff’s revolutionary methods for the first time. “But I also discovered how great this club is and made contact with the fans and supporters clubs … There was a wonderful atmosphere and I look forward to seeing you all here again on June 10th".
He was speaking about an event unveiled by Jordi Cardoner, a free show at the Camp Nou that is being specially designed to bring back all the memories of that momentous date.
The Wembley 92 heroes will be welcomed to play a 7-a-side match, also featuring a number of legendary international stars, and a huge audiovisual spectacular to go with it.
In anticipation of that day, current Everton manager Ronald Koeman appeared in a video to talk about the goal he scored in the closing minutes of injury time in May 1992 – adding the he’ll be here for the event on the 10th.
Josep Maria Bartomeu closed the occasion by describing how "Koeman’s goal was way of burying the past and setting out on a journey that has turned us unto a winning club, and a loved, admired and global one too.”
“As Cruyff used to say, ‘go out and enjoy yourselves’. He showed us the way forward and guided the way this club all the way through from the Masia training grounds”.
The event was also used to officially present the commemorative shirt that the players will be wearing on Sunday at home to Eibar, bearing the inscription '#Wembley25, 20 mayo 1992'. The first team shirt this season was especially designed to reflect the design worn in that unforgettable 1991/92 season.
