Lieke Martens, European champion and tournament MVP

The new Barça striker scores in the 4-2 win over Denmark in the final in Enschende and also collects the Best Player award

What a day for FC Barcelona’s new signing Lieke Martens. Not only do Holland beat Denmark 4-2 to win the Women’s European Championship for the first time ever, putting an end to a string of six consecutive German victories, but she is also named MVP of the tournament.

The 24-year-old, who turned blaugrana after signing from FC Rosengård this summer, played in all six of her country’s games on home tuef, scoring three goals and supplying two assists, and being named best player in the games against Norway and Belgium.

One of her new team-mates at FCB, Line Røddik, had to settle for a runners-up medal after coming on for the last fifteen minutes of the final played at De Grolsch Veste, Enschede.

It was Martens who put the hosts ahead for the second time today, making it 2-1 after 28 minutes. The Danes would again manage to cancel that lead out, but Holland were in front for the third time just after the break.

This time they manage to hang onto the advantage, and when Miedema added a fourth with a minute to go, the home fans could start celebrating.
