Álvaro Cortés and Xavi Espart, together with a number of Barça Atlètic and academy players, are enjoying a unique opportunity. Since Monday, they have been taking part in FC Barcelona's pre-season training camp in England alongside the first team. Both La Masia graduates featured in Barça's opening preseason friendly against Birmingham City and spoke to the media from St George's Park on Sunday.

Cortés: 'An opportunity'

Alvaró Cortés described his inclusion in the training camp as "a great opportunity ... We're approaching it with a great sense of responsibility because we're here representing Barça. It pushes us to give our very best and gives us the belief that maybe we can earn an opportunity here and succeed here."

The young defender also reflected on the team's first preseason fixture: "I felt really good. I settled into the pace of the game very quickly. We didn't manage to win the penalty shootout, but it was a good test to start preseason."

He also laughed when asked about his superb penalty in the shootout: "To be honest, it came off even better than I expected. But that's where I usually put them."

 

Espart: 'Still trying to show my best'

Xavi Espart also stressed his determination to make the most of the opportunity, saying "I think I came here in good shape after the Under-19 European Championship. I was really pleased to start the other day against Birmingham. I tried to give my best and, honestly, I'm really enjoying the experience."

The young full-back also highlighted that "Barça has always been a club that believes in young players, and even more so in recent years. Seeing other teammates come through gives you confidence."

Espart also described his relationship with Hansi Flick as very strong and was keen to express his gratitude to the Barça coach.
