On Sunday 25 January at 4.15pm CET, Barça will play their first home match of 2026 at the Spotify Camp Nou. The visiting side will be none other than one of Spanish football’s historic clubs, Real Oviedo. After years of ups and downs in the lower divisions following their relegation in 2001, the Asturian side return to Barcelona 25 years later.

Welcome back

Almost 25 years have passed since 27 May 2001, when Barça and Oviedo last met at the blaugrana stadium. That match ended in a 1-0 away win, although a series of poor results on the final matchday ultimately led to Oviedo’s relegation to the Segunda División.

On that occasion at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barça’s starting line-up was: Dutruel, Sergi Barjuan, Frank de Boer, Puyol, Reiziger, Cocu, Guardiola, Rivaldo, Overmars, Luis Enrique and Kluivert. A lot of time has passed since then.

Head to head

The most recent meeting between the sides took place last September, when Barça won 3-1 at the Carlos Tartiere. Looking further back, however, Oviedo are one of the teams that have caused Barça the most problems, winning four of the last nine matches they have played against the blaugrana.

Difficult moment for the Asturians

Oviedo are not enjoying their best spell of the season. Guillermo Almada’s team sit bottom of the league with 13 points and have failed to win any of their last 13 league matches, recording seven draws and six defeats. They are also the lowest-scoring side in the competition, with 11 goals (four fewer than second-bottom Getafe). As such, they need to react if they are to stay up.

Barça strong at home

Barça come into the match with a point to prove after a painful defeat in San Sebastián against Real Sociedad, in a game in which they hit the woodwork as many as five times. Despite that setback, Barça are very reliable at home, having won their last nine league matches at Spotify Camp Nou.
