Barça Atlètic were left with a bitter point after drawing 2–2 with Valencia Mestalla at the Estadi Johan Cruyff on Wednesday evening. The blaugranes led for long spells thanks to goals from Juan Hernández and Guille Fernández, but a stoppage-time penalty snatched a draw for the visitors. Juliano Belletti’s side finish the first half of the season third, with 29 points from 17 games.

Barça dominated from the outset and created chances early on through Shane Kluivert, Guille Fernández and Joan Anaya, all denied by Valencia keeper Vicent Abril. The pressure finally told in the 17th minute when Juan Hernández’s cross deceived everyone and flew straight into the net.

The Valencia reserves grew into the game after the half-hour mark and equalised on 34 minutes through Víctor Fernández, who converted from a corner rebound. Barça responded just before the break, however, as Kluivert won possession inside the box and teed up Guille Fernández to restore the lead.

The visitors pushed forward after the interval, but Bernad produced a fine save to deny Víctor Fernández. Barça looked dangerous on the counter and came close to a third through Kluivert and debutant Pedro Villar, both again thwarted by Abril.

When victory seemed secure, the referee awarded Valencia a penalty deep into stoppage time, which Aimar Blázquez converted to make it 2–2 and leave Barça Atlètic ruing a late setback.
